Mobile Phones are Changing the Face of Business

By Sam Greengard, June 2004

The first mobile phones hit the market in the early 1980s —they weighed several pounds, had limited battery life, and offered scratchy, spotty connections. Today,ultra-lightweight mobile phones slip into pockets and pack more power than the computers that guided Apollo spacecraft to the moon 30 years ago.

When Susan Trainer hits the road, there are only a few things that she doesn't leave home without. At the top of the list is her mobile phone. As the founder and CEO of Trainer Communications,a public relations agency based in Danville,California, she spends more than half her business life out of the office or traveling. Staying connected to people and essential data isn’t just desirable,it is essential.

"Without the right mobile tools it is impossible to manage clients and the business effectively," she says. "All the hard work and effort will not produce results."

In her pursuit of business excellence, Trainer leaves no mobile strategy untouched. She carries a Palm Tungsten W with her wherever she goes. Not only can Trainer access thousands of phone numbers and e- mail addresses and tap on them to dial or create a message, she can view Word or Excel documents and even edit them on the device using a portable keyboard. And if she wants to order a book or tickets to a show she can do so on the spot through Amazon.com.

"Having all my data instantly available from a single, pocket- sized device is incredibly convenient. Having state- of- the- art communications capabilities, including Internet access, gives me an advantage, " she says. What ’s more, when she ’s sitting in on a meeting, Trainer doesn ’t have to spend 5 minutes booting the computer or shutting it down. "It’s great to flip the keyboard and move on to other things. "She uses the device to stay in touch with 13 employees scattered across the U. S.

Like Trainer, more and more busy professionals are going mobile.
